Leeds to finish the season with a bang – Starting XI to face Wigan

So the hopes of finishing in the top 6 were ended last week after a quite awful 45 minutes of football. We did come out in the second half and played the way we should’ve throughout the month of April. We go into the Wigan game with nothing to play for, we’re going to finish 7th which is a massive improvement on season’s gone by despite the disappointment that has come through finishing just outside the Play-Off places. Here’s the team we’d go with…

GK – Rob Green – If it wasn’t for him we’d have been out of the Play-Off race long ago, he’s been fantastic. Hopefully he’ll still be here next season, didn’t think I’d ever say that either.

Into the defence…

RB – Luke Ayling – I’ve seen many Tweets claiming we should go gung-ho and play three at the back. It’s not going to happen in my opinion. Ayling’s been great all year and I’m almost certain he’ll be here next season.

CB – Kyle Bartley – One of those players who could be playing for Leeds for the final time, personally I hope not. He’s easily been one of our players of the season and will captain the side should Liam Bridcutt miss out again.

CB – Liam Cooper – With Jansson suspended I fully expect Cooper to come back in for the final game of the season. Not sure if he’ll be here next season but I’d expect it if Bartley doesn’t return.

LB – Gaetano Berardi – Taylor’s not going to be here next season so Berardi deserves to start. He’s been solid all season from us and absolutely loves it here. I’d give him a lifetime contract if it was me.

Into the midfield…

CM – Ronaldo Vieira – Our best midfielder at such a young age, I pray we don’t sell him in the summer. Imagine if we still had Lewis Cook, I think we’d 100% be in the Play-Off’s. Vieira will start Saturday, no doubt about it.

CM – Eunan O’Kane – We missed him last month and he could’ve been the difference between where we are now and where we could’ve been. I just don’t get why we dropped him when he has the experience of winning promotion.

CAM – Pablo Hernandez – I’m not sure if Hernandez will still be here next year but he’s been unreal at times, he can be an absolute magician at times. I think he’ll start on Sunday, Monk’s persisted with him for this long so why not a little while longer.

Into the attack…

LW – Stuart Dallas – I thought Dallas looked a lot brighter than we’ve seen from any attacking player recently on Saturday, he delivered a really good cross in for Wood’s equaliser. I think he’ll start again on Sunday.

RW – Hadi Sacko – Like Bartley and Hernandez this may well be his last game for Leeds. He looked so promising at the start, beating players at will but he’s very much stalled since January. It’s as if he’s been told not to run beyond full-back’s and just pass it sideways or backwards every time he gets the ball. Big performance needed from him on Sunday.

ST – Chris Wood – Wood’s got to end the season with a bang, he’s been class for us this year. I pray that he’ll still be here next year but I wouldn’t hold it against him if he wanted to make the move to the Premier League. I just feel if we keep him and Monk and improve other areas of the squad we’ll be challenging for automatic promotion next year.

We may as well go for it Sunday, give the away fans something to cheer after the recent disappointment. Give them a good send off before we mount our promotion push next year.

  • Leave one of the wingers out and give Antonsson his first full game for ages, he doesn’t deserve to have been completely left out of Monks so called rots ion policy where he said everyone has a chance, if played properly we have a 20 plus goals striker there, definitely keep him for next season.
