Leeds United are interested in signing free agent centre-back Martín Cáceres, most recently of Southampton. He’s played for a whole host of big clubs including Barcelona, Juventus and Sevilla. He is mainly a centre-back but has also played on both sides of the defence in the past. Victor Orta, our new director of football, was at Sevilla when the Spanish club signed Cáceres, so the link is there. He has quite a lot of pace for a centre-back and would be a high quality partner for Pontus Jansson, presuming Kyle Bartley doesn’t return.
This would be an extremely ambitious signing for Leeds, though it won’t be cheap or easy to make happen. Obviously with his lack of transfer fee, Leeds could afford to give him higher wages than they may have done otherwise. Celtic and Swansea are also reportedly interested in the centre-back, so he would probably have to be persuaded by Orta and whoever our manager is. If Leeds were to pull this off, it would show that we really mean business. Radrizzani has talked about how fans should have been disappointed by missing the playoffs, so that seems like a minimum requirement for the upcoming season.
Here’s a highlight video from Martin’s time at Juventus –
