In odds compiled by SkyBet as of 10/11/19, Leeds United are favourites to secure the signature of wantaway striker Josh Maja. This news comes after Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie announced that Maja told Sunderland he would not be signing their contract offer.
Maja has been in fine form this season racking up 14 goals in League 1 with 2 assists to go with that figure. This is remarkable for a striker who is just 20 years of age.
The video compilation of his goals this campaign show he is an intelligent forward who can anticipate his chances well, using both space and time before applying the finish. With Maja embroiled in a contract dispute it is likely his asking price will be somewhat lower than his true value but that will of course unfold as this story progresses.
The question on the lips of many Leeds fans I’m sure is whether another forward is necessary. Typically employing a lone striker how would Maja make his way into the side with Kemar Roofe in the form of his life, Tyler Roberts set to come into his own and £7 million Patrick Bamford on the cusp of returning from injury?
This in mind, is a forward a priority? We believe the wage budget to be somewhat stretched, are we not in requirement more so of a goalkeeper and even an attacking midfield player to fill the gap left by Samu Saiz? With an initial reluctance from Bielsa for new blood in January it seems he has come round to the idea considering the departures and the revolving door of injuries that has been installed at Thorp Arch.
The next few weeks I’m sure will prove to be very interesting, though how many times in the past couple of months have we said that…
