Kalvin Phillips played a massive part at a time when Leeds United made their surge up the table and cemented their place in the Championship’s top 6. He’s been struggling for game time recently but last night reminded everyone of why he was key to that run. Replacing Eunan O’Kane with Phillips in the 59th minute turned out to be a masterstroke from Garry Monk and the Leeds United coaching staff.
After Birmingham’s equaliser you would’ve expected them to take the game by the scruff of the neck but that wasn’t the case. Just 4 minutes after, Phillips and Doukara linked up well before the former squared the ball across for an unmarked Chris Wood to bag his second of the game. Celebrations ensued in the away end at a time when Leeds United needed their big players to stand up. Phillips also played his part in United’s third goal, hustling their defender into making a mistake before Alfonoso Pedraza bagged his first goal for the club with a tidy finish.
Leeds fans were very happy with Phillips’ little cameo and made their thoughts clear on social media.
He's had a ton of unwarranted stick imo, but Phillips changed the game for us. #lufc
