Leeds close to confirming first January signing

According to Finnish newspaper MTV, Leeds will confirm the signing of centre-back Aapo Halme in the next few days. The 6’3, 19-year-old defender plays for HJK Helsinki.

Obviously, there isn’t too much to say about Halme given his lack of appearances and his age. However it does fit the bill of what Leeds were said to be looking for in January, a young backup centre-back. He is also a key member of the Finland U21s. Halme was part of the title winning team in Finland last year, so he knows what it’s like to win.

  1. I doubt that I am the only Whites fan who in January would much rather be reading about signings for the first team squad rather than the U23s. Whilst the future of the club obviously is important, the numerous additions already made at U23 level have hardly brought about a runaway success. In the first 14 fixtures of the season they registered 9 defeats and only 3 wins, so excuse my scepticism. I sometimes wonder if we are recruiting on the cheap with a “sign and hope” basis in the belief that if we sign enough eventually we’ll land a special talent.
A similar “scattergun” approach was applied to first team recruitment in summer, but Klich, CBJ, Anita, Pennington, Sacko, Grot, and Cibicki are nowhere near being first eleven regulars or even looking likely to be for the foreseeable future, and Lasogga and Alioski have still to convince.
This season presents a definite promotion opportunity, but the board has to grasp the nettle and sign the reinforcements that fans are crying out for – an accomplished striker who is capable of performing in the Championship, a natural specialist left back rather than another right back who can fill in there if required, and an experienced CB to provide cover for Cooper/Jansson when the inevitable injuries or suspensions occur but without weakening the team. I am hopeful for the outcome of this season, with the right player recruitment in the next few weeks that could rise to optimism or even confidence. January has the potential to be a very significant month for our club.
