Leeds United could welcome Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper back to action sooner than expected.

That’s according to Daily Mirror journalist David Anderson, who says that some around the club believe manager Marcelo Bielsa is expecting the worst with the return dates he has set for the duo.

In a season where injuries have proved a big problem for Leeds, the absences of Phillips and Cooper have been particularly significant.

Neither player has featured for Bielsa’s side since the 2-2 draw with Brentford back at the start of December.

While providing updates on the pair, the Leeds boss has previously suggested it will be March before either is able to feature again.

Now though, it appears there is a belief within the club that it may not be that long until the duo are back on the pitch for the Elland Road club.

Providing an update on the pair’s fitness, Anderson, who regularly reports on Leeds for The Mirror, told Give Me Sport: “Bielsa keeps talking about March at the earliest for those two, although some people at the club seem to think that’s maybe unnaturally gloomy.

“They think there may be a chance they could be back maybe a little bit before that.”

This would surely be a big boost for Leeds if it proves to be the case.

Both Phillips and Cooper are hugely influential figures in the centre of the park and defence respectively, who have certainly been missed when unavailable.

As a result, with Leeds still not out of the relegation fight just yet, having those two available for as much of the season as possible could be hugely important for the Elland Road club.

However, with Bielsa often reluctant to rush players back to quickly, it will be intriguing to see how long it is before they return to action even once fit, given their value to this playing squad.
