Leeds United are reportedly still monitoring Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner, should they need to sign someone for that position.

The Whites have two positions still lacking a great deal of depth as we head into the second gameweek of the Premier League season.

Junior Firpo’s injury meant that Leeds started their season without a recognised left-back as Pascal Struijk filled in against Wolves.

Suggestions from Jesse Marsch back in July outlined that Leeds could be in the market for a player in that position, despite emerging claims from Phil Hay this morning that the club are happy with Firpo’s recovery progress.

Should the question be asked of Victor Orta of signing a player to cover the position alongside the former Barcelona man, Philadelphia Union’s Kai Wagner appears to be on the shortlist – according to journalist Manuel Veth:

Interest from elsewhere remains for the 25-year-old, and while there is no offer on the table from Leeds a move could materialise.

Wagner is valued at £2.7million (Transfermarkt) and has five assists in 24 MLS appearances this season.

Do Leeds still need a left-back in January?

No

Wait and see.

With the left-back situation, I think it’s fair to see Firpo as the first choice for the position, but to think we are sufficiently covered for the season is just incorrect.

We can’t rely on playing a centre-back out of position every time Firpo is absent, which is very often – six absences from injuries, suspensions, and fitness issues already since he joined last summer.

It doesn’t have to be someone that can usurp Firpo as the starting option, but we need to have someone in there who can offer competition to him, as well as put in a strong performance when he’s not there.

Wagner might be that player, but a signing doesn’t look totally likely right now.
