It seems Leeds United will be targeting maximum points from their final two matches of the Premier League season.

That’s after manager Jesse Marsch admitted that he identified those games as two in which the club would need to get points in, when he was first appointed at the club.

It has been a rather mixed period for Marsch since he took over from Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds manager back in February.

After losing his first two games in charge, Leeds then enjoyed a run of five games unbeaten, although that has now come to an end with three straight defeats against Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

As a result, with two games remaining, Leeds sit 18th in the Premier League table, level on points with Burnley in 18th and two behind Everton in 16th, though those two sides have a game in hand.

But with Leeds’ final two games coming at home to Brighton this afternoon, and away at Brentford on the final day, it seems these are two fixtures Marsch was always targeting an important return from.

Speaking ahead of that clash with Brighton at Elland Road about his side’s final run-in, the Leeds boss told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “All I knew is when I stepped in, I was getting into the fire.

“When I came in all I tried to do was learn as quickly as possible to give us the best chance in the last 10-12 matches to have a chance. I looked at the last two games and thought we’d need results in those games.”

There can be no real denying that Marsch has been proved right here.

A failure to get some sort of result from these games will almost certainly mean Leeds are back playing Championship football next season, given how things are going into these games.

However, that does not mean they are going to be anything like easy, even if on paper, Brighton and Brentford will cause less of a threat than the three sides Leeds have just lost to.

Both of these sides have enjoyed excellent seasons, and will be looking to end on a high with a couple more wins, which puts Leeds in the firing line at a bad time for them.
