An EFL statement has read that the current League Two campaign is to be curtailed paving the way for a points per game ruling on promotion after a unanimous vote from clubs to end the season.

Society hasn’t known normality for what seems like an eternity now thanks to the global pandemic with the footballing world halting to a complete stop while it is unsafe to play.

Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town back at the beginning of March seems like a distant memory, with Luke Ayling’s sensational goal being more than a month old now, but there is still every hope that the Whites will be able to continue their charge towards the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa.

The finances of the Premier League and eve the Championship are a far cry from those in League One and League Two and it has shown in the handling of this current lockdown, with clubs living extremely close to the brink in the lower tiers thanks to the lack of matchday revenue to keep the clubs afloat.

With the finances and safety of the players and staff in mind, it has been confirmed by the EFL today that the unanimous decision from the clubs in League Two has been to curtail the rest of the season and opt for a points per game system to determine who claims promotion to League One, with relegation still yet to be confirmed.

The same statement shows no confirmation of what will happen in both League One and the Championship, but the intention remains to ensure that the second tier season can be completed, whether or not that will come into fruition is unknown at this stage.

The Leeds United camp will remain with the same approach that they want to complete the season and earn promotion as naturally as they can, but with the cushion now that they know promotion will be granted on points per game if they cannot fulfill the fixture list, given their healthy lead at the top.

It’s the strongest indication yet of how the EFL would settle the Championship season in the event of it not being completed and the fans were keen to express their delight…
