Leeds United parted ways with former first-team coach and under-23s manager Carlos Corberan back in 2020, as the Spaniard looked to pursue his career in management.

With Marcelo Bielsa’s appointment in 2018, his coaching staff came with him and helped elevate the standards at Thorp Arch significantly.

Investment in the youth side came alongside the coaching of Carlos Corberan, who was also dipping his feet into the first team to aid Bielsa too.

His performance as the under-23s manager helped the side transition very well from the Professional Development League, into the Premier League 2 system once he decided to leave.

In an interview with Coaches Voice, Corberan had this to say on his decision to leave:

“I always wanted to be a coach. You also understand that, if you want to keep growing, every stage has to come to an end at some point.

“After promotion, I felt there couldn’t be a better ending. Promotion was the best way to give thanks for all the support and trust that Marcelo, Andrea, Iván and Víctor, alongside his working group, had given me.”

He opted to make the short move to Championship side Huddersfield Town, where he endured a rocky first season trying to implement his ideas in the Terriers with a very limited budget.

Their patience paid off in his second season, with signings during his time such as Pipa, Naby Sarr, Sorba Thomas, Levi Colwill and others helping mount a promotion charge in the 2021/22 season.

“Town are going up and the Leeds are going down” chants suggested moving on from Leeds was baring fruit for the 39-year-old, as he guided his side to the 2022 play-off final. However, a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest sparked a worrying trend in the summer where the newly-promoted side were at the centre of the Terriers’ dismantling.

Losing Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien to Forest, their owner Evangelos Marinakis also looked to bolster his other club, Olympiacos, seeing him persuade Corberan into a move away from the John Smith’s Stadium.

Such a move has not gone well for Corberan, as he lasted just 11 games before getting the sack in Greece, having won just two games this season.

He is now without a job as he explores his options after doing a brilliant job with Huddersfield.
