Gary Neville has praised Kalvin Phillips for replicating his Leeds United form when he plays for England.
Leeds’ homegrown midfielder has established himself in the England squad since promotion, as well as playing well for Marcelo Bielsa in the Premier League.
Phillips’ ability to perform consistently for club and country is the reason why Neville believes he’s bound for the Euros.
Phillips has made seven appearances for England this season, with the last 12 months proving to be a whirlwind for the Leeds midfielder.
He’s gone from a Championship player to a full England international, who looks set for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming summer tournament.
For Neville (speaking live on Monday Night Football), the ability that Phillips has to play like he does for Leeds in an England shirt is a big plus.
He plays that position really well, in the midfield two alongside (Declan) Rice. He replicates his club form for England.
Kalvin Phillips had adapted well, he plays the position well and he does what Gareth Southgate wants.
The 25-year-old started all three of England’s World Cup qualifiers last month, featuring in defensive midfield either alone or with Rice.
Despite featuring regularly, Phillips did receive criticism from some fans.
Neville talks so much sense on a range of topics and, for us, he’s bang on again here with regard to Phillips.
Rival fans have been quick to comment on Phillips and what he brings to the England side, but it is very similar to what he brings for Leeds: passing through the lines, breaking up play and protecting the defence.
Phillips isn’t going to get you goals or assists given his strengths, but he offers you so much more, which Neville recognises.
The closer that Euro 2020 gets, the more likely it looks that Phillips will be going away with England and representing Leeds.
It won’t please everyone, but Leeds fans are delighted to see Bielsa’s main man getting an opportunity he’s worked so hard for.
