Kalvin Phillips should be loaned back to Leeds United for the rest of the season.

That’s according to former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, who appears disappointed by the lack of game time the midfielder is currently getting at Manchester City.

After spending the whole of his senior career to date with Leeds, Phillips did of course depart the club in the summer, completing a reported £42million move to City on a six-year contract.

Since then however, the England international has rather struggled for game time in Pep Guardiola’s side, making just three competitive appearances, all of which have come from the bench.

The latest of those saw him used as a 92nd minute substitute in City’s 2-1 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

Now it seems that in the wake of that, Agbonlahor may feel that a temporary change of scenery is needed for the 26-year-old, potentially in the form of a return to Elland Road.

Taking to Twitter to give his thoughts on Phillips’ situation after that brief outing against Dortmund, the ex-England international wrote: “Shame to see kalvin Phillips getting 1 minute of playing time. Can’t they loan him back to Leeds for the season?”

Regardless of whether or not Agbonlahor was serious with this suggestion, it would feel like a surprise to see it happen.

For starters, with the transfer window now closed, this is a deal that would have to wait until January to be done, and a lot can change between now and then.

Beyond that, Tyler Adams and Marc Roca have impressed in Phillips’ role for Leeds this season, so it would be harsh to drop either of them, especially with the investment put into those signings.

You also feel that Phillips may prefer to stay and fight for his place at The Etihad as well, where City will of course need options themselves, meaning it is hard to see this one happening.
