David Haigh, former managing director of Leeds United, is being held in Police custody over alleged fraud and money laundering – believed to be related to the sale of the club to Massimo Cellino’s Eleonora Sport Ltd. Haigh, who resigned from his post at GFH earlier this year to solely focus on the club, was arrested at their Dubai offices on Sunday – after allegedly being offered a new job by the Bahraini investment bank.

A statement from his former employer’s has been released. GFH-Capital, who still own 10% of Leeds, have had this to say: “GFH Capital understands that a former employee has been arrested in Dubai and charged on suspicion of fraud, embezzlement and money laundering while he was employed at the bank. We are unable to provide any further details at this stage while the case is being considered by the authorities.”

A close friend to Haigh has had this to say: “David has done absolutely nothing wrong or illegal. He is appalled to find himself in this position. However, as someone who knows Dubai well and respects its institutions he is confident that the authorities will see these allegations for what they really are and clear him from any wrongdoing.”

36-year-old Haigh was set to become the club’s chief executive after Cellino’s 75% purchase of the Elland Road outfit was complete but he resigned from the club soon after the Italian was on board due to an uneasy relationship between the two.
