Ian Wright has delivered his verdict on Kalvin Phillips receiving a call-up to the England set-up.

Leeds United is a club bursting with pride today following Phillips’ call-up to the senior England set-up, but even those outside the club are delighted with the news.

Gareth Southgate has included Phillips in his England squad for next month’s UEFA Nations League meetings with Iceland and Denmark.

It’s the first time that the 24-year-old has been handed recognition at international level and is the icing on the cake after a memorable summer.

Phillips has just helped his boyhood club to promotion and the Championship title, whilst in less than three weeks he will be going toe-to-toe with Premier League Champions, Liverpool.

It’s hard not to be delighted for Phillips and it appears that Match of the Day pundit, Ian Wright, shares the enthusiasm of the Leeds fans in reaction to today’s news.

Taking to Twitter, the Arsenal legend posted a simple, but effective, message:

Wright had a vested interest on things at Elland Road last season given Eddie Nketiah’s loan spell.

It’s clear that from his time watching Leeds, Phillips impressed him and feels this call-up is overdue.

Whether that’s the case or not is up for debate, as Leeds were just a Championship side. However, Southgate has been bold and given our midfielder the perfect shot in the arm ahead of the Premier League season.

Wright, like Leeds fans up and down the country, will watch on with excitement now as Phillips goes in search of his first cap.
