It’s been claimed that Leeds United are “unlikely” to trigger the 12-month option on Adam Forshaw’s contract at Elland Road.

Leeds are facing a number of big player decisions heading into 2023, with Forshaw included.

The midfielder signed a new deal at Elland Road back in January 2022, seeing him through until the summer of 2023. Leeds also have the option to extend the player’s stay into the 2023/24 season.

Forshaw has managed only 47 minutes in the Premier League through three substitute appearances, with a hernia issue leaving him sidelined for two months now.

Whilst he’s expected to return to action on the other side of the World Cup break, it’s looking unlikely that his long-term future lies at Leeds.

Leeds Live are reporting that with Tyler Adams and Marc Roca now at the club, and with Darko Gyabi emerging, 2023 feels like the perfect time to part company.

“Leeds do have an option to trigger an extension in his current deal, but at this stage it feels unlikely. The people in charge will probably view 2023 as the right time to part ways, particularly with the impressive form of Adams and Roca, as well as emerging talent such as Darko Gyabi.”

Should Leeds sell Forshaw in January?

Forshaw is a really useful option to have kicking around the squad, so whilst Gyabi and Sam Greenwood are developing this season, you’d be minded to keep hold of him.

However, looking ahead to the summer of 2023, it’s probably the right time for Forshaw to go looking for a new opportunity to start more games.

At that point, Adams and Roca will still be ahead of him in the pecking order, whilst there’s a good chance that a Gyabi or Greenwood has picked up the necessary experience to be regarded as a viable alternative.

In addition to that you’ve got Lewis Bate returning to the club from a loan with Oxford United in 2023 and potentially coming back into the fold, as well as Stuart Dallas hopefully returning to full fitness.

Forshaw’s place will be a way down the pecking order, almost leaving it pointless triggering a contract extension.
