Leeds’ third and final senior signing this month looks to be a central midfielder, with Victor Orta’s efforts likely to hit a higher gear as the final week of the transfer window gets underway.
Plenty of speculation around the name of who Leeds sign has surfaced throughout the month, with Leeds putting a lot of effort into negotiations with Angers over Moroccan star Azzedine Ounahi, including meeting with representatives in Paris over a possible transfer agreement.
Now, Leeds’ focus looks to have turned away from the 22-year-old, with Matteo Moretto revealing that the Whites have lodged an enquiry to sign Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie:
While Leeds are seemingly putting a lot of their efforts now into landing a third USMNT international this season in McKennie, Fabrizio Romano has added further insight into this deal.
He reports that while McKennie is the priority, Ounahi remains a player Leeds have on their shortlist of targets for the final stages of the window:
Will Leeds sign a midfielder before the January deadline?
It does strike me as odd that we have switched from Ounahi to McKennie, two players with very different profiles that would have very differing roles at the club.
Ounahi would be a real solution to Leeds losing Mateusz Klich’s smart ball progression, while McKennie would mark a shift away from that, by adding another industrious, high-pressing midfielder, but one able to add goals too.
Having said this, I still think we would be making a very shrewd signing to land McKennie at this stage in the window.
