There’s been plenty of talk regarding Leeds United’s talisman, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, recently.
In his press conference yesterday, Daniel Farke confirmed that Calvert-Lewin was struggling with a bruised foot.
However, Calvert-Lewin’s wife’s comments on social media regarding our striker “clearing the garden fence” have given us all a bit of hope that our talisman will be ready to take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light tomorrow afternoon.
But now a former Everton employee has made some outlandish comments regarding Calvert-Lewin that will raise more than just a few eyebrows.
Former Everton employee makes ludicrous Dominic Calvert-Lewin contract claim
When you look at how Calvert-Lewin has revived his career in West Yorkshire, it’s natural for those associated with Everton to be frustrated that they let a striker of his quality walk out the door for free.
Duncan Ferguson clearly shares this way of thinking. The Toffees former target man stated that Everton should’ve paid Calvert-Lewin £200,000 to stay in Merseyside.
However, in a recent report from Football Insider, former Everton scout Bryan King has made an interesting claim regarding Calvert-Lewin’s contract, to say the least.
King has claimed that Calvert-Lewin could actually in fact be earning that at Leeds.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on £200,000 a week now,” King said.
“I’d imagine he’s on a very good wage.”
Obviously, for a newly promoted club like we were last season, to offer a player £200,000 a week would be unheard of and absolutely outrageous.
However, when you look back at our managing director Robbie Evans’ claims about Calvert-Lewin’s contract, it essentially confirms that King’s claim couldn’t be further from the truth.
Robbie Evans gives a more accurate insight into Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s Leeds contract
In a Q&A session with the media over the summer, Evans described Calvert-Lewin as a £20million investment. This is despite the striker technically arriving as a free agent.
When Calvert-Lewin signed, he put pen to paper on a three-year deal.
So when you split the £20million investment over the course of Calvert-Lewin’s three-year deal, that means the striker roughly takes home around £6.66million per year.
So, if Evans’ comments are accurate, Calvert-Lewin is likely on around £128,000 per week. This may not be 100% accurate. However, it’s a lot more accurate than King’s baseless claim of our striker earning £200,000 per week.
And it goes without saying, I’d trust our current managing director’s word over a former Everton scout’s when it comes to suggesting how much our players earn.
Whatever Calvert-Lewin is on at Leeds, he’s earned every penny. But to suggest he is on £200,000 is wildly inaccurate. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out it’s something we as a club can’t afford for now.
