Leeds United loaned out Ian Poveda to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day after interest from Birmingham City, and he haunted the Blues with a Man of the Match performance on his debut.

Leeds sanctioned a number of outgoing deals during the January window, with Daniel Farke seemingly happy to let certain fringe players leave the club.

Ian Poveda was the final exit from the club, as he made the short journey down to Hillsborough to sign for Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the season.

Poveda stars on Owls home debut

A home debut was in store for Poveda at the weekend, playing against Birmingham City under the lights on Friday.

Poveda was in inspired form throughout the match for the Owls, creating the opener with dazzling footwork near the by-line, to cut back for Ike Ugbo for an easy finish.

The winger nearly then got a goal for himself when he made a fool of Ivan Sunjic to curl narrowly wide of the far post.

Wednesday made sure of a crucial three points in the second half as Ugbo got a second, but his brace wasn’t enough to take the Man of the Match award from Poveda.

Tony Mowbray reacts to Poveda display with transfer admission

In the opposition dugout, it will have been tough for Blues boss Tony Mowbray to to stomach a Poveda shining display, given he was another manager who wanted him on deadline day from Leeds.

Having taken him on loan at Blackburn Rovers in 21/22, he was eager to reunite with the Colombia international, and said this post-match on him (via Birmingham Live):

“Poveda is a good player, I would have to say. We were very close to signing Poveda in this window just gone. He’s a player I had at Blackburn Rovers and is a very talented young boy.”

Ian Poveda: Here’s what you could have won, Mowbray

Poveda could be a difference-maker for Wednesday in this relegation race, as his performance on Friday proved.

He was the best player on the pitch for the time he was on, and that creativity should be huge to Danny Rohl.

You can see why Mowbray wanted him in his Birmingham City side, and he saw first-hand what he could have had himself.
