Paul Heckingbottom insists that he and the Sheffield United board are determined to keep Sander Berge at the club amid interest from a number of clubs including Leeds United.

Leeds have had something of a midfield revamp this summer, losing Kalvin Phillips but bringing in Marc Roca, Darko Gyabi and Tyler Adams.

Berge was a player that was suggested as a transfer target for Leeds earlier in the summer, whilst recent reports have outlined how Brighton and teams in Europe are also interested.

Despite the interest in Berge, he’s started Sheffield United’s Championship campaign, scoring two goals already in the opening weeks of the season.

There’s a real ambition at Bramall Lane to retain him, too, which Heckingbottom outlined in his programme notes ahead of last night’s win over Sunderland.

“There has been a lot of speculation all summer about Sander Berge, he knows how much I rate him, and I want him here. Luckily, Prince Abdullah and the board are feeling exactly the same way.

“As much as we have worked hard to bring players in, regardless of our financial situation, we work to a framework and know money is tight everywhere. From my point of view the board deserve credit for keeping our players here.

“You don’t want to lose your better players and Sander has certainly showed early in the season that he is one of our top performers.”

Judging by Heckingbottom’s comments, Berge isn’t going to be leaving Bramall Lane this summer. He’s a key part of their side in the Championship and will be crucial to the Blades targeting a Premier League return.

You can see why Leeds might’ve been interested in him earlier this summer, but given the work they’ve done on the midfield already, it doesn’t make sense to bring in another body.

That’s particularly the case when it comes to someone like Berge, who would cost a significant fee to lure him out of South Yorkshire.

It sounds like Leeds, and whoever else wants Berge, has all on getting Heckingbottom and the board to agree to a sale.
