Leeds United have been linked with VFB Stuttgart centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos during the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old former Arsenal defender was first rumoured to be a target for the Whites during the January transfer window, with Bild journalist Christian Falk revealing to CaughtOffside that Leeds were keen on signing Mavropanos late in the window.

The Greek international only joined the Bundesliga outfit permanently in the summer for a reported maximum fee (including add-ons) of around £4.5million, as per The Mail.

Diego Llorente has departed for AS Roma on loan with a view to a permanent summer transfer, potentially opening the door for Leeds to sign a centre-back.

Those initial reports from Falk suggested that it could cost suitors around £13million.

However, German outlet Kicker are now reporting that he will cost around €20million (£17.6million) this summer, amid interest from Nottingham Forest.

They also report that Stuttgart’s sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth has confirmed that the club have received no offers for Mavropanos so far.

How many signings did Leeds make this summer (youth included)?

Mavropanos would be an excellent signing for Leeds if the club wanted to upgrade their pool of central defenders this summer.

At 25, there is also time for him to grow and develop, but more than anything he would improve the speed and athleticism in Leeds’ back line, whilst also being strong aerially as well.

Mavropanos is rapid and has excelled in the Bundesliga. He would be a good upgrade for the right-centre-back role. Leeds lack recovery speed in their defence, and could play higher up the pitch with more mobile defenders at the club.

There would also be the added bonus of potential resale value for the player, should he impress in the Premier League. The price seems a fair one, given his improvement in Germany since leaving Arsenal.
