Diogo Monteiro proved to be Leeds United’s only addition on transfer deadline day.

Leeds did the bulk of their business earlier in the window, signing Max Wober, Georginio Rutter and Weston McKennie to boost Jesse Marsch’s options for the second-half of the season.

However, there was room for one deadline day arrival in the form of Monteiro, as Leeds worked on a one in, one out basis yesterday: Monteiro coming in and Diego Llorente going out.

It has been suggested that Monteiro will replace Llorente in the Leeds squad, despite the age difference of 11 years and the fact that the club announced the 18-year-old will initially link up with the U21s after signing a three-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road.

We heard little from Monteiro, who has been picking up pockets of senior experience with Servette in the Swiss Super League, although there was a message on Twitter popping up from the centre-back as last night’s 11pm deadline closed in.

Monteiro wrote: “Happy with this new challenge,” alongside a picture of himself signing his terms with Leeds.

Monteiro, although initially signed for the U21s, doesn’t have a plethora of senior centre-back depth ahead of him.

Whilst Max Wober, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk are all left-sided centre-back options, Robin Koch is the only natural fit on the right, with Luke Ayling his deputy.

Leeds feel that Monteiro is a player that could be fast tracked into the senior setup.

Monteiro has a really good opportunity on his hands at Leeds.

Whilst the Premier League and Premier League 2 is a step up from the Swiss Super League, the teenager has an interesting skill set and plenty of potential to make the move work.

He will be offered time in the U21s but also a pathway into the first-team under Jesse Marsch.

Whilst it was a quiet deadline day for the Whites, this signing is one that should be approached with both intrigue and excitement.
