It’s said that a new contract for Raphinha at Leeds United would reflect his importance and current status as one of the Premier League’s best players.

Leeds are said to be locked in talks with Raphinha and Deco – the player’s agent – over a new deal at Elland Road.

Raphinha arrived at Leeds in 2020 and is currently contracted until 2024. However, his form for Leeds in the Premier League has made him one of the hottest properties in the country.

And, Leeds want to tie him down long-term.

A report from the Yorkshire Evening Post has looked at the potential agreement Leeds could strike with Raphinha, outlining what a new contract would do.

With the Brazilian international contracted until 2024, it’s not about finances with Leeds and more about handing the winger what he’s worth.

“The winger, undoubtedly the star attraction at Elland Road these days, is in line for a deal that will more closely reflect his importance and status as a top Premier League player.”

The 25-year-old has scored 14 goals and registered 10 assists in a season-and-a-half in Leeds, including nine goal involvements already this year.

With a World Cup looming later this year, the Yorkshire Evening Post also outline how it might be in Leeds’ best interests to retain him until after then.

“He will play Champions League football in the not-so-distant future, with or without Leeds, but if they can hold onto him at least until he has a chance to shine at the World Cup then they’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.”

This is on the money when it comes to Leeds needing to recognise Raphinha’s contribution with a new contract.

When he arrived at Leeds he was untested in England, but since he’s become one of the leading wingers in the competition and a Brazil international.

If Leeds want to keep him sweet, he needs new terms on his contract.

There’s also a need to consider the financial side of it too and what it means for Leeds if they ever look to sell the winger.

Having him on a multi-million pound contract, with a huge release clause protects the club and also doesn’t block the pathway for Raphinha to move to a Champions League club after the World Cup.

This new deal makes sense for so many different reasons.
