Gaetano Berardi has been rewarded for his commitment to Leeds United by signing a 12-month contract with the Premier League side.

Leeds has been Berardi’s home for seven years now, but he was out of contract and sidelined for nine months heading into 2020/21.

It’s now been announced that Berardi will be sticking around.

Berardi suffered an ACL tear in his knee in Leeds’ penultimate game of the Championship season against Derby.

Leeds have had a quick turnaround and are four games deep into their Premier League season. Berardi has not been forgotten, though.

The Whites moved to announce a new contract for the 32-year-old yesterday afternoon. It commits Berardi to the club for 2020/21 and allows him to continue his rehab at Thorp Arch with stability at this uncertain time.

Ambition still remains for the defender, though, and he hopes to be available to contribute to Leeds’ Premier League season.

This is the right thing to do. Berardi put his future on the line to get us promoted, he bleeds Leeds and deserves the stability off-field.

More importantly, Berardi now has a chance of playing for Leeds in the Premier League.

It’s still a long way off, but he’s got a chance and Marcelo Bielsa will appreciate his presence in the changing room.

Our longest serving player, getting the treatment he deserves from the club. You love to see it.
