Stuart McKinstry has completed a move away from Leeds United, joining Motherwell on a season-long loan.

Leeds have been more open to loan moves for some of their young talent this summer.

That’s a result of Jesse Marsch and his management style in comparison to Marcelo Bielsa, who was keen to keep the top youth players on his watch.

It’s been confirmed on Leeds’ official website that McKinstry has left the club on loan.

Motherwell is his destination, with the winger joining the Scottish outfit on a deal until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

McKinstry, 19, initially joined Leeds from Motherwell back in 2019, with the teenager becoming a regular in the club’s U23 set-up since then.

He’s also made two senior appearances for the Whites, featuring in the EFL Cup clash with Fulham and Premier League defeat to Tottenham last season under Bielsa.

May 2022, Elland Road?

You could understand Bielsa’s stance on young players and how they were kept in-and-around Leeds’ first-team.

However, there’s little denying that the argument against that is a justifiable one too.

McKinstry is 19-years-old now and needs to be playing more senior football.

Therefore, a move to Motherwell and a chance at playing that little bit more regularly in the first-team makes complete sense.

Whether it offers him a long-term future at Leeds remains to be seen, but for the immediate future, it’s the right move.
