With the January transfer window looming, there is bound to be speculation rising for Leeds’ top performers – even if those moves are for the summer.
This comes after a summer where Leeds lost their two best players and were forced to reinvest that money to make replacements.
Illan Meslier’s performances since promotion have been hugely impressive, knowing that he’s still just 22 and already has 87 Premier League appearances under his belt.
Long-term investment in the goalkeeper department is a topic of discussion for a number of the top clubs in the division, with Tottenham Hotspur already earmarking the Frenchman as a solution to the ageing Hugo Lloris, while Manchester United also view Meslier as a great prospect for the future – via The Athletic.
Now, journalist Simon Phillips is reporting that Chelsea are looking into the signing of Meslier too in the near future.
Writing on his official Substack page, Phillips shared this insight on Stamford Bridge interest:
“I also reported Chelsea’s interest in Illan Meslier from Leeds, but I was told at the time the club felt he would not be an improvement on Mendy right now.
“However, a second source has now told me today that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Meslier, which tells me that our interest is more than legit.
“It does seem though that first instincts from Chelsea were Meslier is just a player they had been considering, and the collective belief is that he would not be ready/good enough for Chelsea. However, these things can always change, and Meslier is certainly a player that Chelsea are keeping tabs on currently.”
Can you see Meslier leaving Leeds in the next year?
It’s inevitable that the efforts of Meslier are being watched closely by the teams at the top.
He’s got everything it takes to become a world-class ‘keeper, with immense shot-stopping, solid presence in his box, and distribution to cope with the demands of playing out from the back.
The only criticism you could have of Meslier right now is his decision-making when playing as a sweeper or from crosses, but those flaws are ironed out with experience.
He’s definitely one to watch in the transfer market, and it’s going to be a huge offer that takes him from us.
