Leicester City manager Brenden Rodgers has revealed why he brought Dennis Praet in for the win over Leeds United.

Leeds are now seven games without a win after an embarrassing display at bottom-of-the-league Leicester brought a 2-0 loss.

The Foxes came into the game without key player James Maddison, yet still managed to cut Leeds open at times with Jesse Marsch having no answer.

Goal number two highlighted a major shortcoming of the system as Leeds’ lack of structure in wide spaces allowed the home side the simplest of build-ups from back to front, culminating with neat link-up play at the edge of the box to see Harvey Barnes get his customary goal against Leeds.

Dennis Praet’s involvement in this goal and the whole game was crucial to unpicking Leeds’ press and defensive shape, according to Brenden Rodgers.

He had this to say on how he utilised the Belgian (via Leicester Mercury):

“I thought he was excellent.

“Firstly, he pressed it really well, his energy was good, he was back in supporting Tim [Castagne] and Youri [Tielemans] on that side.

“He’s a really clever footballer tactically. Why we played him was because Leeds press it so well, you’ve got to play forward as much as you can, but you also need players to run forward, and his run really set up that goal as well. He had a chance right before he came off but I think his legs had gone at that point.”

What is most worrying for me at the moment is how straightforward some of the lesser teams in the league have broke us down.

Leicester, Crystal Palace, and Brentford all managed to threaten once they went more direct.

We’re massively exposed in wide areas and it’s leaving our centre-backs being dragged out of position.

Something has to change with that setup without the ball or we won’t be seeing Marsch for much longer.
