Azzedine Ounahi has been the subject of interest at Leeds United this month.

The Angers central midfielder is touted as a potential Mateusz Klich replacement, who has departed the club after over five years of service, joining D.C. United in the MLS.

His impressive performances at the World Cup with Morocco made him hot property going into the January window and Leeds United are amongst the head of the queue for the signature of the 22-year-old.

Here, we take a look at the state of play regarding Ounahi and a move to Elland Road.

What’s the latest?

Fabrizio Romano stated last week that he believes the midfielder has the chance to move in this window, he said: “I think there is a chance for him to go to a different league, because Leeds are interested, this is true.”

However, in another recent update he was less sure about a move to Leeds, Romano said: “After Georginio Rutter deal, Leeds will decide how to proceed on Azzedine Ounahi deal as initial talks took place days ago with player side and Angers.”

Napoli are providing the most interest in Ounahi outside of Leeds’. However, Romano believes Leeds are pushing the hardest currently, he added: “Leeds are pushing. Leeds are still in the race. They have made a proposal. They are discussing with Angers and with the agent of the player to try to make this deal.

“They don’t want to spend crazy money. They want to be careful with their spending in January. But they want Ounahi, discussion are going.”

Also, Phil Hay has revealed “multiple sources are telling The Athletic that the Elland Road side are seriously keen — keen to the point of genuinely considering a move for him before the end of this window.”

Is a move likely?

Leeds All Over sources confirmed to us that the Whites sent an entourage to Paris to thrash out talks with representatives of the player last week. The discussions were said to have been positive.

However, with Jesse Marsch’s future up in the air, The Mail are reporting that discussions for the central midfielder are on hold until the board have made a decision on his future.

There is, of course, the possibility that Ounahi is signed regardless of what happens at management level, such is the quality of the player; but there is no guarantee.

We also confirmed recently that the player’s preference is the Premier League and he is open to the move. However, his agency would prefer a move to Napoli at the top of Serie A.

One to watch with 12 days remaining in the window.
