It was a matter of when, not if. And today the news has broke. Aston Villa have launched a bid for Leeds’ holding midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, according to the Telegraph. The bid is believed to be in the region of £14 million.
Kalvin was central to Leeds’ success last year, but of course it was Aston Villa who went one better than Leeds and secured Premier League football through the play-offs.
This is just the beginning and Kalvin’s value obviously far exceeds the first offer and so it is expected this story will rumble on through the transfer window.
It remains to be seen whether Kalvin staying was a key facet to securing the services of Marcelo Bielsa for another season at Leeds. The player was at the heart of Leeds United’s style of play that Bielsa fashioned at Elland Road. Losing Kalvin would be losing so much more than just a key player, it would be a blow to the foundations that were built in Bielsa’s first season at Elland Road.
Kalvin has been at Leeds for his entire footballing career and is clearly passionate for Leeds, his emotional display following the Play-Off Semi Final defeat to Derby will live long in the memory for all Leeds fans.
