Alan Shearer has praised the performance of Diego Llorente in Leeds United’s win against Manchester City on Saturday.

Leeds stunned City at the weekend, with Marcelo Bielsa overseeing a 2-1 win despite the fact that his side played over 45 minutes with 10 men.

Stuart Dallas’ brace stole the headlines, which was acknowledged by Shearer. Yet, he reserved special praise for Llorente.

Llorente had started alongside Cooper at centre-back, but was then forced to link up with Pascal Struijk following his captain’s red card.

Later in the day, Robin Koch was introduced, but it was Llorente that was the consistent figure at the heart of Leeds’ defensive performance.

Commenting to premierleague.com about the performance of the Spanish international, Shearer said:

He gave nothing away, stopping so many Manchester City moves.

Llorente made it into Shearer’s Team of the Week, alongside Dallas, understandably.

Bielsa was also named as the Manager of the Week.

The performance of the entire Leeds side from a defensive point of view was exceptional, with Llorente included in that.

He’s been getting better week-on-week in the heart of defence, with this his best performance to date.

Llorente took time to get going, but he’s now looking Leeds’ most assured performer in the heart of defence, with Cooper, Struijk and Koch competing to partner him moving forwards.

If he can build on this outing again, he’s going to be looking like one of the most assured defenders in the Premier League.

That seemed a long shot when injuries were plaguing him.
