5 things we learned

5 things we learned from the draw against Newcastle

|

All in all, a massively important result given the rest of the scores. The game showed a lot of positives and negative for Leeds, let’s get right into it.

1) – Our back five are ridiculous – Newcastle had 22 shots, 19 corners, although only 4 shots on target. However, Leeds were under the cosh for a long, long time and to withstand it for such a long time is some feat. Pontus Jansson was back to his amazing best, Bartley led by example and Rob Green was unreal. Chris Wood takes most of the plaudits for our season and that’s fair play, but we’d be nothing without our solid defence. Pontus Jansson and Kyle Bartley are the best two centre-backs we’ve had since the Premier League, Luke Ayling arguably the best right-back and Gaetano Berardi epitomises Leeds. Not to forget Charlie Taylor either, possibly the best left-back in the Championship. Who would have thought Rob Green was going to be this good?

2) – This is Chris Wood’s world and we’re all just living in it –
25 league goals for him now, I really didn’t see this coming at the start of the season. He well and truly proved me wrong and I’m glad he did. Whilst watching the game, I thought to myself that Wood hasn’t had a single half-chance but he only needs one, he got it and took it. That’s the story of our season, a great cross and a great finish. Get in there.

3) – Leeds have got what it takes –
On so many occasions that game would have resulted in a 4-0 loss and a red card for Kalvin Phillips or Pontus Jansson. However, we’re passed all that now, the resilience in the squad is quite incredible. Leeds were under so much pressure going into the game and to come away with a vital point after being dominated for large spells tells you what we’re all about. We’ll look back on that goal at the end of the season for sure.

4) – Roofe and Pablo quiet, but have magic –
Throughout the game, I was wondering to myself how Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez were still on the pitch. They just weren’t performing in the slightest, Pablo set Newcastle up perfectly to hit the post. All our attacking was going down our left through Pedraza, Roofe just couldn’t get anything going. Just when you’re contemplating life as we know it, Pablo plays a ball to Roofe that nobody else in the team would have done, Roofe swings in a wonderful ball and it’s 1-1, magic.

5) – Garry Monk does know how to celebrate – Up until last night, I had never seen Garry Monk really celebrate a goal. He knew just how important that goal was, the whole bench went mental when it hit the net, it’s great to see. Obviously celebrating goals is not a requirement for a manager but I feel sometimes it’s necessary, I used to love Grayson’s wild celebrations after late goals. If you have a minute, watch this and look for Green in the bottom left corner –

it’s brilliant.
