Newcastle United are reported to be plotting a swoop for Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville alongside Borussia Dortmund, should Javi Gracia’s side be relegated this season.

That’s according to Football Insider who claim the Magpies will only make a swoop for the 21-year-old’s services if Leeds fall into the second tier.

Summerville signed a new deal at the start of the season, keeping him at Elland Road until the summer of 2026. He has so far scored four and assisted a further two in what is his breakout season with the Whites.

The Dutchman is one of a number of quality younger players to have played so far this season, impressing in the first-team where some senior players have struggled for form and consistency.

Here, we take a look at TWO things the club need to weigh up with Newcastle and Dortmund circling.

Leeds’ winger depth?

Leeds’ strongest area of the team is currently the number of options they have in wide areas.

Summerville is joined in the winger and wide forward category by Luis Sinisterra, Jack Harrison, Wilfried Gnonto, Brenden Aaronson, and Georginio Rutter. It begs the question: can Leeds let one or two depart?

Summerville has been good this season, and will only improve from here as well; but there are so many other options that getting a decent fee for one or two would not leave Leeds short. Summerville may be viewed as a loss that the club can afford to make.

Newcastle will also likely be able to afford him for a good fee, even if the Whites do fall into the second tier. If the hierarchy and management are happy with the options they have, then Summerville could raise funds to put towards another more pressing position, too.

How important could Summerville be in the Championship?

The other thing that ought to be weighed up is the potential impact of Summerville in the second tier.

Other options at the club are likely to have more suitors and options available to them, namely the likes of Gnonto and Sinisterra. Leeds can’t sell all of their wingers, and will have to convince a few of them to stay for a promotion push.

Summerville falls into that category of being an easier one to keep hold of and convince, especially with the appeal of a full season as a starter for what should be a team at the top end of the division.

That could be crucial to his development and makes him a more appealing option to try and retain, for both the player and the club’s sake. Other players can be sold to help raise necessary funds, whilst Summerville remains as a key man in a team gunning for the title.
