Leeds United‘s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League were dealt a blow on Saturday afternoon, as they were beaten 1-0 by Everton at Goodison Park.

After a goalless first half, the hosts went ahead 20 minutes into the second half, when Seamus Coleman’s effort from a tight angle evaded Illan Meslier and found its way into the far corner.

That was enough to secure all three points for the Toffees, lifting them out of the bottom three, and causing Leeds to drop to 19th in the Premier League.

Perhaps not surprisingly therefore, plenty has been said about the Whites following that defeat on Merseyside.

So with that in mind, we’ve taken a look at two things pundits have had to say about Leeds after that defeat to Everton, right here.

Shearer on attacking problems

It was another frustrating performance for Leeds going forward in particular at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, in such a vital game.

The Whites failed to really pose a threat to Jordan Pickford’s goal throughout the afternoon, and have now failed to score in four of their last five outings, leaving Alan Shearer far from impressed with their attacking performance.

Speaking about Leeds’ threat going forward in that game on Match of the Day (63minutes), the Premier League’s record scorer said: “Never had a shot on target today, they were pretty clueless upfront.

“They had no options whatsoever. Yes Everton defender well. Long hopeful balls up, look at the reaction from Bamford there, as if to say ‘what am I meant to do with that?’.

“And that happened on more than one occasion.”

Sherwood makes managerial prediction

Following the sacking of Jesse Marsch at the start of this month, Michael Skubala took interim charge of the Whites for the third game running in the Premier League.

However, having picked up a respectable 2-2 draw in his first game in charge at Manchester United, that was followed by a 2-0 defeat to the same opposition, and then this defeat to Everton, which Tim Sherwood believes is a run that will force the club to act.

Asked on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday if he had seen any change in Leeds under Skubala from Marsch, the former Tottenham boss was quoted by Leeds Live as saying: “No, not at all.

“I think that’s the last we see of Michael Skubala to be honest. I think they’ll react, you know what owners and chairman are like, they panic.

“I think they’ll make a decision, I think they need a manager in there as soon as possible to give them a chance, especially in light of the results we’ve seen today.

“They’ve got dragged right back into it. I think he’ll go back and do the (under) 21s. It’s been a tough job for him, he’s had two very difficult games but they performed better against Manchester United than they did today.

“It was almost a must-win game for them, it was a winnable game, it was there for the taking but you have to give credit to Everton.”

With Javi Gracia now reportedly set to be named as Leeds’ new manager, it looks as though Sherwood’s prediction will be proven accurate.
