2 regrets Leeds United may be having looking back on the summer transfer window

|

Leeds United aren’t in the best of positions at the moment and a lack of further summer action could be attributed to their struggles.

There’s not much we can do right now apart from wait patiently for key players to return, but Leeds could have done more in the summer.

It’s not as if the club didn’t try though, with Junior Firpo, Kristoffer Klaesson, and Dan James all arriving alongside Jack Harrison’s permanent signing.

However, there are definite regrets that Victor Orta and co might want to make amends for as January draws nearer.

Here, we take a look at two regrets the club will have from the summer window recently gone

Not landing Conor Gallagher

The biggest regret the club will have is one that was largely beyond their control.

Crystal Palace beat Leeds to the loan signing of midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea and have had their noses rubbed in his marvellous form since.

It was a good decision from Gallagher to join the Eagles as his England call-up shows, but Leeds will be kicking themselves that he got away, despite Orta’s famed presentations being given to him.

We did try to make amends for this failure by pursuing Lewis O’Brien, but the Huddersfield Town man would have likely served as a player more akin to Adam Forshaw than the attacking midfielder we needed (and still do).

It’s the position we still think could do with most attention in January and a player like Gallagher would be perfection.

Not finding Patrick Bamford cover

If you were to ask Bielsa who he would have behind Bamford in the pecking order, he’d likely say Rodrigo, Tyler Roberts, and Joe Gelhardt.

There’s three names there that we call upon, so what’s the issue?

Two league goals between them. Both coming from Rodrigo in fortunate circumstances (penalty v Wolves, goalkeeping howler v Norwich).

Bamford’s absence has shown us that we don’t really have a regular source of goals when he’s not there, even with Raphinha’s magic.

The issue for Leeds and Bielsa is that being a good goal scorer is not near enough – see Eddie Nketiah’s 19/20 loan – but everything else Bamford excels in is required too.

We’ve had to re-jig our shape to make up for the fact we’re missing a hugely vital cog, and as our league standing suggests, it’s not a winning formula.
