Leeds United are ruing the decision not to sign Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, as he continues to impress in a Napoli shirt.

Leeds’ transfer business in 2021 set them up for a tough year as new arrivals did little to improve the side and help them kick on from a fine 2020/21 campaign.

A player that Leeds opted not to sign was Georgia international Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was previously plying his trade in Russia with Rubin Kazan.

A brief stint back in his homeland came before a move to Napoli materialised this summer, where his form has completely exploded.

Here, we look at two reasons why Leeds will be seriously regretting not signing the young winger…

An absolute bargain

Leeds appeared to be quoted at around €20million for the winger, which is around double what Napoli ended up paying for him.

You can take either of these fees, it’s the same result: He was a complete bargain of a lifetime for the Serie A outfit.

Leeds have done well to sign players that come with significant sell-on value, but this would have been the mother of all resales.

Kvaratskhelia looks destined for the top with how he’s performing both in the Italian top flight and in the Champions League.

Here’s what you could have won

Leeds weren’t without a winger signing that summer.

They did make one on deadline day, in the shape of £25million Manchester United arrival Dan James.

The Wales international came with the surprise of the club spending that much, knowing there were players of Kvaratskhelia’s ability out there for cheaper, and that price tag was not justified.

Four goals and three assists last season beat Jadon Sancho’s tally in the Premier League, but James certainly did not live up to the expectation, having seen Marcelo Bielsa adore the winger since his first season.

So, we have someone, who openly admitted talks with Leeds ought to have continued, now ripping it up in the Champions League, while our £25million outlay is now playing for a Premier League rival on loan from us with Fulham.
