Leeds United’s Alfie McCalmont is another who looks set to depart the club in January as a loan move to St Mirren emerges.
After promotion to the Premier League, minutes have been hard to come by for a lot of Leeds’ academy players that had made their way through the ranks back in the EFL.
Alfie McCalmont was one of those, who has been subject to two loan moves since, but came short in the summer window just gone as he remained in Leeds for this season.
However, sources have indicated to Leeds All Over that a loan move is in the pipeline for McCalmont, in the shape of St Mirren who play in the Scottish Premiership.
Here, we look at two reasons why agreeing to this exit for McCalmont is the right decision.
He’s not got a future here
As much as it would be nice for McCalmont to still have any sort of chance here, he’s not going to be playing any time soon.
He’s stuck in the under-21s that’s not doing him any good for his development after two loan moves.
McCalmont signed a contract extension until 2024 after promotion, and it’s not really worked out for him making his way into the side, so this loan is the best thing for him.
If he can showcase his talents at St Mirren, perhaps it’s another chance to put him in the shop window.
Which new deal is most important?
Jack Harrison
Pascal Struijk
Robin Koch
Mateo Joseph
Stephen Robinson
Managing St Mirren right now is Stephen Robinson, who was the same man who signed McCalmont while he was in charge of Morecambe at the start of last season.
The Northern Ireland midfielder was a core fixture in the Morecambe side while Robinson was at the club, and he’ll be hoping to translate that form to St Mirren.
McCalmont will also be aiming to get back to his best form under Robinson, as his exit from Morecambe coincided with his playing time becoming seriously reduced.
The best way for him to get to grips with a new club is some sense of familiarity.
